‘A Man Called Ove’: Yet Another Grumpy Old Man, But Better Than Most

a-man-called-ove-620x350

They don’t come around all that often, but the movies love a charismatically gruff old man. From the goofy classic Grumpy Old Men with Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau to Clint Eastwood’s racist curmudgeon in Gran Turino, there’s a strange appeal to bitter old cranks. At least, when they discover they have a heart after all. Hannes Holm’s A Man Called Ove, from the novel by Fredrik Backman, follows in the genre’s creaky, recalcitrant footsteps. With a wonderful performance as the titular Ove from Rolf Lassgård, the film hits all the right irascible notes. Nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category, and another for Makeup and Hairstyling, A Man Called Ove has been an unlikely success.

Countdown To Civil War: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Easter Egg Wants

Civil War Final PosterCaptain America: Civil War, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated film of the year, is days away from dropping.

The trailers for the film have been absolutely astounding; the build up to the conflict between two favourite heroes, riveting; and the fan excitement level, at al all-time peak.

As the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase Three, Captain America: Civil War should form the basis for the plethora of Marvel films to come. Wrapping up the phase will be the two-part extravaganza: Avengers: Infinity War.

We here at Biff Bam Pop! love talking about them. That’s what this article is for: Easter Egg wants. Our wishes. Our desires. And like good ‘ol Cap, we could do this all day.

Winter at TIFF: Wim Wenders’ Early Shorts

reverseangle

As part of their expansive retrospective on the exceptional German director Wim Wenders, The TIFF Bell Lightbox delivers a rare opportunity to see the man’s early short films as one screening. Most of these films date back to the late 1960s when Wenders was a film student in Munich. The films are the collected diaries of a young filmmaker experimenting with the medium, searching for his voice. While many of the films feel like fragmented snapshots of little consequence, it is evident that a vision is starting to form. Viewing the compilation in the context of Wenders’ later work, it is miraculous to see the jump in craftsmanship in such a short amount of time.

Biff Bam Pop’s It’s All Connected: Golden Glitter & An Underlying Darkness-The Legacy of Tony Stark In The MCU (Part 1)

Tony StarkEveryone loves a superhero. And that’ s never been truer than today, in our pop-culture obsessed twenty-first century.

The main purveyors of superhero stories are, of course, the comic book publishers, large, medium and small. Marvel Comics, arguably the most globally successful of those creators, has birthed no fewer than a grandiose thirty-four films over the last decade and a half, with two more set to be released later this very calendar year. The most eagerly anticipated of those yet-to-be seen films must be Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), a film whose original garnered over $1.5 billion in box office receipts in 2012.

That’s a tidy sum for movie that had an approximate budget of $220 million. And that bottom line doesn’t include the lucrative franchise offerings of licensed toys, video games, magazines and all the ancillary products featuring the Marvel Comics characters of Captain America, the Hulk, Nick Fury and Thor.

Yes, everyone loves a superhero. And these days, everyone loves the character of Tony Stark, the superhero known around the globe as Iron Man.

Brilliantly played with zest and aplomb by actor Robert Downey Jr., Tony Stark, the Iron Man, is known as the quick thinking, fast-talking, faster acting, mustachioed playboy with a golden ticket in the form of his parentage, as well as an all-important golden suit of high-tech armor.

But beyond his humorous quips, his intrinsic glamour and his numerous heroic deeds, there lays a dark lining to the legacy of everyone’s favourite, shining character. It is a legacy that Tony Stark has both inherited and, in fact, cultivated, through his own personal failings.

And so much good and bad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe exists because it.

Exodus2014PosterWell, something of a minor calamity has befallen yet another recent adaptation of an Old Testament Bible story.

But this weekend saw the release of fan and critic favourite director, Ridley Scott’s latest, Exodus: Gods and Kings. The film is the distinctly Hollywood-ized story of Moses and the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt. So, how would it fare, especially against our predictions?

Follow me after the jump and we’ll take a look at what films rejoiced – and what films caught plague at the box office this weekend!

Guardians Goes Galactic: Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

guardian-of-the-galaxy-poster1Wow. Wow. Wow.

I thought I was being slightly aggressive with this weekend’s prediction on how much box office pull a talking raccoon would have on cinema-goers. Never would I have thought that I had grossly underestimated that pull.
