Come on, it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you!
Well, we’re inching closer to the end-of-year holiday season. Maybe you’ve noticed that your local mall is decked to the gills in tinsel? Perhaps you’ve guiltily watched one or two bad made-for-TV holiday movies on some run-of-the-mill specialty channel (so that’s what Winnie Cooper is up to these days! Also, she was great!)? Maybe you’ve been busily writing, then scratching, then re-writing various dinner engagements with friends and family in your December calendar?
Well, DC Comics and their stable of writers and artists have been busy getting various superheroes and villains in the spirit of the season, working tirelessly on a holiday-themed production of their own.
Today sees its very timely release!
Get set to jingle all the way to the DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1!
We have been bereft of new Doctor Who for an entire year (“The Power of the Daleks” doesn’t count), since the last Christmas special, “The Husbands of River Song,” a madcap and bittersweet conclusion to the River Song saga. To trump that adventure, showrunner Steven Moffat pulls a new rabbit from his hat – Doctor Who does superheroes. Meet me after the jump for my thoughts on “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
While we wait for their movie sequel later this year, Marvel’s animated Guardians of the Galaxy return to Disney X-D for a very special Christmas episode. Confronted by a miserly despot, the Guardians use a familiar theme to teach him a lesson A Christmas Carol style. Meet me after the festive jump for my thoughts on “Jingle Bell Rock.”
It’s the best kind of comic book reading, believe me.
Now, you might be getting comics given to you as gifts. (Maybe there’s one or two from this list or this list.) But you might still want to pick up something to read that signifies the season. Something featuring the greatest superheroes and villains the world has ever known.
Lucky for you, both DC Comics and Marvel Comics are publishing their own holiday specials today… you might want to consider getting in on the zany, wintry, heroic fun!
Follow me after the jump for the low down on the DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1 and the Gwenpool Holiday Special: Merry Mix-Up #1!
The year 2016 has been a rough one when it comes to our heroes passing. For me, I lost two out of three of my favorite performers, but thankfully all three have new collections out for the holidays. Meet me after the jump for my 2016 Holiday Gift Guide suggestions involving David Bowie, Prince, and Kate Bush.
The Doctor Who Christmas Special has become tradition on Christmas Day evenings and this year, showrunner Steven Moffat has given us a very special present – the return of a favorite recurring character. Professor River Song, the daughter of companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, and The Doctor’s wife, is back! Meet me after the time and space jump for my thoughts on “The Husbands of River Song.”
What did the Flash get for Christmas? Not one, not two, but three Rogues on the loose out to take over Central City. It’s Captain Cold, the Trickster, and the Weather Wizard vs. the Flash, and if that’s not enough, we also meet Wally West for the first time. Meet me after the super speed jump for my thoughts on “Running to Stand Still.”
The Holiday Guide is full of the latest and greatest, but what if you
have someone younger on your list who needs some helpful film history?
Here’s a list of 5 Christmas DVDs every human (over the age of 14)
The Classic – “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)
This movie is the quintessential Christmas movie. It shows you how to
be both giving and self-reflective; to view your actions and how they
impact others. It’s a lovely example of a black & white film and of
one of the best actors of that generation, James Stewart. Everyone
should know the line “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his
wings.” and have it melt your heart. It shows us the true richness of
family and friends over material affluence, but in a way so subtle
that you barely take notice. Like all the others on this list, it’s a
film you could watch every single year. Heart-warming. Simply
It’s that time of year. Time to cut down the Christmas branch, take a trip down Pa’s slide, and grab a little bit of barbecue with Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas.
