We’re hearing that it’s full of action, adventure, tears and joy – and that there are <a-hem> pardon the pun – wonderful performances throughout the film!
Yesterday, Biff Bam Pop! Editor-In-Chief, Andy Burns, predicated a $105 million bankroll for the film in its first weekend of release. That’s a hefty and, frankly, outstanding sum of coin for this film and a number that can only be deemed a victory for the DC Cinematic Universe. There’s a lot riding on the Wonder Woman film both creatively and monetarily.
But Wonder Woman is more than just a single film. The character is a 75-year old pop culture icon of strength, love, hope, and will – not to mention an number of other positive and engaging adjectives!

Perfect timing, really…and there are a number of things you, or someone you love, can do to participate in the worldwide celebrations!
Early reviews have been positive to absolutely glowing – and that sense of affirmation is just the vaccination that the DC Extended Universe film franchise has desperately needed! With the tent pole Justice League film dropping later this year and the cinematic debut of Aquaman now firmly in production, the Wonder Woman film had a massive pop culture encumbrance to bear on its shoulders.
Indeed, perhaps unfairly, the future of Warner Brother’s comic book universe of films was in absolute jeopardy due to previously dark and critically lackluster movies.
Thankfully, that sentiment is not the same in the comic book world – the wellspring of these globally recognized pop culture icons.
This Saturday, June 3, is appropriately, #WonderWomanDay. Fans around the world will be celebrating the feminist icon with comic book readings, cosplay, theater-goings and much, much more.
But you can get an early start on the festivities today with the release of Wonder Woman Annual #1 – a fantastic introduction to the character for readers of any age!
A few weeks ago, this column focused on the release of Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1, a sort of standalone, introductory issue, aimed at setting the stage for the new Wonder Woman monthly series.
The various “Rebirth” branded publications from DC Comics have been released since the beginning of June and will continue over the coming weeks. Today, however, sees the release of Wonder Woman #1 – the new monthly series starring everyone’s favourite Amazonian Princess. It starts directly after the last page of Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1, which was a little thin as a story chapter, but a riveting start on a long-form story, full of potential.
Wonder Woman #1, of course, expands on that potential. Radically and epically!
Last week saw the launch of a number of new DC Comics #1 issues – all under the “Rebirth” brand. Of course, this column, like much of the pop culture world, focused on their significance, which you can read about that right here.
Yeah, it’s pretty exciting stuff.
But it’s summer, after all, and that must mean a DC Universe reboot.
We comic book fans are suckers for reboots. We may gripe about them and their yearly regularity, but we love them nonetheless. And so do comic book stores. Those “Rebirth” branded issues last week saw some pretty high sales numbers and there are many more to be released over the coming weeks.
But there’s one “Rebirth” title that I’m really excited about, really rooting for. And it’s out today – with a timely new start for its title character.

I don’t usually write about superhero comics, or add my two cents to the internet outrages, controversies, and speculations that the comic book industry produces like Campbell’s makes soup, but I think this might be a good time to make an exception. Biff Bam Pop! readers may know that I’m something of a Captain America fan from my two-part look at Cap and historical memory, which you can read here and here. What you may not know is that these days, the only comics I collect are Our Army at War/Sgt. Rock, and Captain America. Those are the only two titles that will never be sold and replaced with trades, or donated to a library book sale, or whatever, that I bag and board using archival materials, and that I occasionally take Smaug-like glee over just possessing. I also occasionally like to take a pile of them out of their bags and curl up and binge-read them, reveling in the smell of old comics, looking at the ads, old-school lettercols, back matter, backup stories, etc. – you know, enjoy them as comic books.
Technology moves so quickly these days, so quickly that sometimes we can’t even keep up with it. Madefire is technology so new it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page yet! All kidding aside, for those of us who love our comics in digital form, you can forget standard motion comics, flash animation, even ComiXology to an extent.
