Relive Days Gone By With “Black Hammer Giant-Sized Annual” On The Wednesday Run

black-hammer-giant-sized-annual-1The comic book annual.

In many ways, the comic book annual is a thing of the past – the last refuge of a special excitement for regular readers of an ongoing comic book series. For the most part, the “Annual” magic died out in the mid-1990’s. That makes for at least two generations of young comic book readers that have never really known the thrill of the double-sized, more experimental, stories that “Annuals” often produced.

Today, the “Annual” has generally been replaced by the one-shot issue, the miniseries, or completely wiped from existence in lieu of publishing multi-part stories within an ongoing comic book, that can be easily collected into trade paperbacks or hardcovers. With market-driven forces changed and thin margins and full workloads, there is no appetite for the back-end work needed to create a separate visual tale within the story of an ongoing series.

But there was a time when comic books were madcap fun – and the “Annual” was a staple and eagerly anticipated part of comic book lore.

One series aims to return to those glory days.

Today sees the release of the thrilling, multi-faceted, multi-part, Black Hammer Giant-Sized Annual!

And all of comic book fandom rejoices!

Don’t Get Caught Out Of Your DEPT.H. #1 On The Wednesday Run

Dept.H 1 coverMind MGMT, one of this writers’ fave reads over the last decade or two and was a sort of call-to-arms for writer/artist Matt Kindt. It proved that his very indie sequential art storytelling style could appeal to a more mainstream, mass audience.

And that it did.

Through thirty-six (and maybe a few more if you count on-line productions) monthly issues of Mind MGMT – each full of mystery, shock, mythology, espionage and critical acclaim, Kindt wove a tale unlike any have read before – a truly original work.

Today, Kindt plunges into the deep waters of originality once more with the release of the first issue of his new monthly series, DEPT.H

Today, We Are Gathered Together By Unity #1 On The Wednesday Run–November 6, 2013

A phoenix from the ashes. That’s what we’re talking about when we talk about publisher Valiant Entertainment.

Founded in the late 1980’s as Valiant Comics by Marvel Comics legends, Jim Shooter and Bob Layton, sold to video game maker Acclaim in the mid 1990’s and shuttered in the mid 2000’s, Valiant Entertainment (as it’s now called) was resurrected in 2005 but really rose to prominence in the comic book scene only last year.

But it’s today that the publishing company of superhero comics comes into its’ own. Today sees the release of Valliant’s first superhero team-up book with Unity #1 – history in the making!
