What Makes an Avenger? Reviewing the New Avengers and the New Champions

av1

What makes an Avenger? It has nothing to do really with the heroes themselves, but it has to do with perception. You can say I’m an old man or a traditionalist or just stubborn, but when I think Avengers, I have some very specific heroes in mind, and lately, I’m not getting them in any of the comics out there at the moment calling themselves Avengers.

You could say I’m resistant to change. You could throw the Silver Age example of Cap’s Kooky Quartet at me, and say that I accepted that change without bitching, but that’s not quite true. Captain America and that trio of ex-villains still had to prove themselves in combat against Doctor Doom, Kang, Attuma, and the Masters of Evil, before anyone really believed they were the Avengers.

Here’s the bottom line. When Ultron and an army of Ultroids are incinerating your neighborhood and threatening the human race with extinction, do you want to see the Falcon with Captain America’s shield, a woman dressed like Thor, and Spider-Man, who for years the Daily Bugle has told us was a menace – or do you want Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man? What’s your confidence level?

Meet me after the jump, and we’ll see how the newest heroes to call themselves Avengers, and Champions, are working out, are they worthy?

Oh! The Inhumanity #1 On The Wednesday Run–December 4, 2013

Have you been reading the regular Infinity reviews over the last few months by Biff Bam Pop’s own Glenn Walker? You know, Infinity. Infinity? The B-I-G Marvel Comics event that just wrapped up last week with the final issue in the “mini-series”? (I use quotes because beyond the sic=x main Infinity books, there were tie-in books that brought the total chapter count to well over twenty.) Jeez, where have you been? Well, get caught up on the latest (and last) Infinity review by our pal Glenn, right here.

Now, I loved Infinity. To me, it ranks up there as one of the greatest event comics I’ve ever read. For those asking, DC’s 1985 series, Crisis On Infinite Earths is still the greatest of the great but Infinity ranks a solid second.

Still, Infinity ended the same way all of these recent “event” series seem to end: with a continuation into yet another “event” series! Oh, the Inhumanity!

Exactly.

Mighty Marvel March: Age of Ultron Book Three

av1Age of Ultron is writer Brian Michael Bendis’ swan song on the Avengers franchise. Ultron is the ultimate archenemy of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Beside their destruction all it wants is the eradication of mankind and the coming of a machine age. The story so far – Ultron has won. We all woke up one morning and everything was different – we were living, dying, or worse, in the Age of Ultron.
