What Makes an Avenger? Reviewing the New Avengers and the New Champions

av1

What makes an Avenger? It has nothing to do really with the heroes themselves, but it has to do with perception. You can say I’m an old man or a traditionalist or just stubborn, but when I think Avengers, I have some very specific heroes in mind, and lately, I’m not getting them in any of the comics out there at the moment calling themselves Avengers.

You could say I’m resistant to change. You could throw the Silver Age example of Cap’s Kooky Quartet at me, and say that I accepted that change without bitching, but that’s not quite true. Captain America and that trio of ex-villains still had to prove themselves in combat against Doctor Doom, Kang, Attuma, and the Masters of Evil, before anyone really believed they were the Avengers.

Here’s the bottom line. When Ultron and an army of Ultroids are incinerating your neighborhood and threatening the human race with extinction, do you want to see the Falcon with Captain America’s shield, a woman dressed like Thor, and Spider-Man, who for years the Daily Bugle has told us was a menace – or do you want Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man? What’s your confidence level?

Meet me after the jump, and we’ll see how the newest heroes to call themselves Avengers, and Champions, are working out, are they worthy?

‘Civil War II #4’ Charms Despite a Few Missteps

aciv1

Marvel Comics’ big crossover event of the summer, Civil War II continues. The emergence of an Inhuman named Ulysses who seems to be able to predict the future has divided the heroes of the Marvel Universe into two factions, those that want to protect the future led by Iron Man, and those who want to change it under the leadership of Captain Marvel. The actions of the latter faction have led indirectly to the deaths of War Machine and Bruce Banner, formerly the Incredible Hulk. Who’s next? Meet me after the jump for my thoughts on Civil War II #4, and beware of spoilers.

Countdown to Civil War: Avengers vs. Defenders

av1

When folks think of Civil War, the seven-part Marvel Comics event that inspired the new film Captain America: Civil War, they think of superhero against superhero in an all-out war. But Civil War is by no means the first time that happened. Meet me after the jump for my thoughts on a crossover event from a simpler time when Loki and Dormammu manipulated the Avengers and the Defenders to go to war against each other.

Holiday Gift Guide 2015: Comic Book Collections Part 3

We’ve been through these comic book collection lists twice already this month, but there’s more. Oh, how there’s so much more!

You can read through Part 1, which mentioned a host of great, affordable comic books for the loved ones in your life. Part 2 continued to showcase great works of sequential art – but these were ones that were slightly more expensive.

This 3rd and final installment mentions the monetary apex of some of the greatest comic book works that were released throughout the year. Yes, they’re expensive. But yes, a loved one should have them in their collection. (Also, self-love is not at all shunned here!)

I know! Times a-tickin’ and the shopping window is a-closin’’! Let’s get to it right after the jump!
