This weekend sees the release of the much-hyped (over-hyped?) Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is sure to top the box office. What sort of money will it bring in? Here’s our prediction:
The previous Spider-Man film did just “ok” business in North America, grossing $262, a far cry from the $400 million + from the first film, and the over $300 million for the second and third. For the past year, there’s been preview after preview after preview; while I love the character, it was even a bit much for me. Finally, this new release is currently listed as “rotten” at Rotten Tomatoes (I’ve seen it, its not rotten, but it’s not great either). Will any of that stop audiences from turning out opening weekend? No way. For this weekend at least, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is critic proof, and no doubt has a built in audience eager to see the wall-crawler once more time. Look for it bring in $95 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Other Woman will grab second with $15 million. Heaven is for Real should hit third place with $10.5 million. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be right behind it in fourth with $10 million, while Rio 2 will close things out in fifth with $7 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $95 million
2) The Other Woman – $15 million
3) Heaven is for Real – $10.5 million
4) Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $10 million
5) Rio 2 – $7 million
