The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy didn’t stop moviegoers from heading to theatres this weekend, as two debuting films had excellent starts. Here’s what went down.
Wreck-It Ralph was clearly the pick for families across North America this weekend, as it grossed a stellar $50 million to claim the top spot at the box office. The 3D, video game inspired Disney flick was exactly what filmgoers were looking for. Wreck-It Ralph should play well over the next few weeks and into the American Thanksgiving.
Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
Debuting in second place with $25.1 million was Flight from director Robert Zemeckis and Denzel Washington, who is most definitely box office gold. The film debut higher than predicted and should also go on to have a solid run over the next few weeks.
The final debut this weekend comes from The Man With The Iron Fists, which grabbed fourth place with $8.2 million. The movie had a budget of just $15 million, so it may wind up slightly profitable for the studio when it’s all said and done, but this was definitely a niche film for a very small audience.
As for the rest of the top five, Argo brought in $10.2 million to land in third place while Taken 2 closed things out in fifth with $6.0 million
