#Kirby 100: Jack and the Argo Nuts

jackkirbyfascists_main

Sure, Jack Kirby’s a revered artist, and he created some of the best known comic characters around. Captain America and the Avengers and the Inhumans and the X-men, Galactus and the Silver Surfer and Red Skull and Darkseid, Kirby had a major hand in the stories and look of the heroes and villains currently raking in millions upon millions for film franchises on both sides of the ‘verse divide. He’s a giant of a figure, as BBP continues celebrating a summer of Kirby at 100. But did you know Jack Kirby was a spy?

JP Fallavollita On…Star Blazers

Each week, one of Biff Bam Pop’s illustrious writers will delve into one of their favourite things. Perhaps it’s a movie or album they’ve carried with them for years. Maybe it’s something new that moved them and they think might move you too. Each week, a new subject, a new voice writing on…something they love.

Star Blazers MainFor something so important, so inspiring in a young boy’s life, it’s a little strange that I can’t quite pin down the exact date. I can only say that sometime in the late 1970’s or, at the very latest, the early 1980’s, I found myself compelled to run home every weekday after school and turn on the television.

There was no horsing around in the schoolyard for me after 3:30 in the afternoon, no visiting friends houses to play board games and street hockey games would have to wait till a later in the day. No. A new cartoon with an animation style and real-time, mature storyline, that incorporated action, adventure, love, sorrow and joy had captivated me.

I had fallen for the 1970’s Japanese import anime science fiction series called Star Blazers.

Record-Breaking Bond – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Bond, James Bond claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend, making a huge splash with the franchise’s biggest opening weekend ever. Here’s what went down:

Skyfall flew to the top of the box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated $88 million to claim bragging rights. This is an absolutely fantastic opening weekend, bigger than Quantum of Solace’s still strong $67 million debut back in 2009. With a number like this and positive critical and fan reaction, Skyfall is in position to possibly gross more than $200 million at the North American box office. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes on the film’s total as the weeks progress.

One movie and one movie only will top the box office this weekend – the long awaited return of the greatest spy in pop culture history. How much will Bond bank this weekend? Here’s our prediction.

Daniel Craig returns as 007 James Bond in Skyfall, the first film in the franchise in four years, released in celebration of Bond’s fiftieth anniversary. There’s a ton of eager filmgoers who have been waiting for this flick, not just in North America, but around the world, where it’s already opened and broke box office records in various territories. So how will it perform this weekend? No doubt, Skyfall will have the biggest opening in Bond history, outperforming Quantum Of Solace’s $67.5 million debut. Look for a huge opening of $95 million.

Wreck-It Ralph Rules – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy didn’t stop moviegoers from heading to theatres this weekend, as two debuting films had excellent starts. Here’s what went down.

Wreck-It Ralph was clearly the pick for families across North America this weekend, as it grossed a stellar $50 million to claim the top spot at the box office. The 3D, video game inspired Disney flick was exactly what filmgoers were looking for. Wreck-It Ralph should play well over the next few weeks and into the American Thanksgiving.

Wreck-It Ralph vs Flight vs The Man With The Iron Fists – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

As our friends in the U.S. continue to recover from the superstorm that ravaged the Northeast, many will be looking for some respite from their hardships at the movies. I would anticipate, however, cinemas will be quieter than expected, for obvious reasons. Let’s see what films be released.

Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph will certainly be the pick for kids and families this weekend. The video-game themed film from Disney tells the story of the villainous title character who decides to repent and become a hero. It’s a clever idea and could be just what people are looking for this weekend – something light and fun, from the always reliable Disney. Look for a first place showing for Wreck-It Ralph, with $37 million.

Argo Claims The Top, New Releases Flounder – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

This weekend, audiences had more to concern themselves with than the movies. As it turns out, the huge storm warnings in the U.S.A. definitely had an effect on the box office, as virtually every film underperformed this weekend. Here’s what went down.

Argo grabbed the top spot this weekend with $12.5 million. While not a hugely impressive number, especially for a number one film, this is proof that not the film has connected with audiences. Look for it to continue its decent run in theatres over the next weeks, and don’t be surprised to see it get a second wind come Oscar nomination time.

Cloud Atlas vs Silent Hill – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

The last weekend in October sees yet another horror film hit theatres, just in time for the Halloween crowd. In the meantime, another potential epic from the Wachowski Starship (formerly Brothers) makes its way onto screens. Will either top the box office? Here are our predictions.

Cloud Atlas is the sci-fi adaptation from the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, and starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving. The book was a bestseller and the film, with its multiple timeshifting storylines is highly anticipated. However, the Wachowski’s havent had a hit in years (Speed Racer sank like a brightly coloured stone), and I doubt Cloud Atlas will reverse that trend. Reviews are mixed (though Roger Ebert was absolutely enamoured with it), and the 161 minute run time is going to limit showings. Look for Cloud Atlas to debut in third place with $14 million.

Paranormal Activity Claims Number One, Alex Cross Flops – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Another October, another Paranormal Activity film in theatres. While the fourth instalment managed to grab the number one spot, it’s clear that the franchise is wearing thin on audiences. Meanwhile, a dramatic turn from Tyler Perry fell flat. Here’s how the weekend went down.

Paranormal Activity 4 PosterIt’s no surprise that Paranormal Activity 4 claimed the top spot at the box office with $30 million. Normally, you’d consider that a great showing, and the film has already made back its $5 million budget so it’s all profit from here. However, this number is a far cry from last year’s third release, which opened with $52 million. So yes, there’s still money to be made, and we’ll likely see a fifth film next year, but the studio should start preparing a new Halloween horror franchise.

Paranormal Activity 4 vs Alex Cross – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Predictions

There should be a lot of activity at the box office this weekend, as the fourth instalment in a horror franchise is unleashed upon a suspecting public. Meanwhile, a box office draw makes his debut as a popular detective. Here’s how the weekend could turn out:

As advertised, Paranormal Activity 4 is the latest in the series that continues to scare up huge business every fall at the box office. But every horror franchise has to fall at some point, and with middling reviews I’m guessing that PA4 is going to begin the law of of diminishing returns. Eventually. However, this weekend the franchise is bulletproof and should have a healthy gross. Look for a first place finishing with $45 million.
