As our friends in the U.S. continue to recover from the superstorm that ravaged the Northeast, many will be looking for some respite from their hardships at the movies. I would anticipate, however, cinemas will be quieter than expected, for obvious reasons. Let’s see what films be released.
Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph will certainly be the pick for kids and families this weekend. The video-game themed film from Disney tells the story of the villainous title character who decides to repent and become a hero. It’s a clever idea and could be just what people are looking for this weekend – something light and fun, from the always reliable Disney. Look for a first place showing for Wreck-It Ralph, with $37 million.
Find out what else is coming out after the jump!
Directed by Robert Zemeckis in his first live action film in years, Flight stars Denzel Washington as a pilot who manages to land a crashing plane, even though he has alcohol in his system. The film has been getting decent notices and audiences love Denzel, but I think the timing of its release after the storm may have an effect on its opening weekend box office. Look for a second place opening for Flight with $17 million.
The final notable new release of the weekend is The Man With The Iron Fists, staring Russell Crowe and directed by RZA. Produced by Quentin Tarantino and co-written by Eli Roth, this Chinese-action film inspired flick has niche written all over it. Look for a fifth place showing with $6 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Argo will come in third place with $10 million, while Hotel Transylvania will claim fourth place with $9 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Wreck-It Ralph – $37 million
2) Flight – $17 million
3) Argo – $10 million
4) Hotel Transylvania – $9 million
5) The Man With The Iron Fists – $6 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
