The Guardians of the Galaxy blasted off this weekend with an outstanding debut. Here’s what went down:
Though it didn’t make the lofty heights we predicted, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 still had a fantastic weekend at the box office, debuting in first place with an estimated $146 million. That’s significantly higher than the original’s 2014 opening haul of $94 million, as the film is well on its way to a $300 million plus haul in North American alone. You can check out Glenn Walker’s review of the film here. I saw it yesterday and found it surprisingly poignant and moving, with excellent performances all around, Director James Gunn is in place to help shepherd the next decade of Marvel films, and I think fans are all the better for it.
Without a doubt, the biggest movie coming out this weekend is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from Marvel Studios. The first movie in this franchise within a franchise was a surprise hit, and one of the best of the Marvel movies. How did its sequel hold up? Meet me after the hyperspatial jump for my thoughts. Heed my warning, folks, there be spoilers ahead.
Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, these are the names and characters we associate as the Guardians of the Galaxy – but the truth is that for decades there were other heroes who answered to that name. And some of them even appear in the new movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out this weekend. Meet me after the jump and I’ll introduce you to the original Guardians of the Galaxy.
Let’s not beat around the galaxy this week. We know what movie is going to top the box office. The only question is, how much will it debut with? Here’s our prediction:
The hype machine has been going full throttle for Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, the sequel to 2014’s massively succesful Marvel Studios film directed by James Gunn and featuring some of the most unlikely heroes to become cultural icons. In the three years since its release, Chris Pratt has become a movie star, Dave Bautista has been a James Bond bad guy, and Guardians has become a franchise movie stars like Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell have wanted to be attached to. All signs are pointing to a massive opening weekend for GOTG: V2, and we’re going to go on the high side of things based on the franchise’s mass appeal. Look for a place debut with $190 million.
This Friday sees the release of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, the continuing adventures of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax The Destroyer, Rocket and Baby Groot. Anticipation is high, and all signs point to this being a massive box office success. Before we get there, though, we’ve got some pretty solid fun to whet our appetites. Among the most exciting Guardians tie-ins is the brand new, multi-part game from Telltale Games and WB Interactive Entertainment.
As we wait for the movie sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy in just a little over a month, the second season of the animated series opens with a special two-parter guest-starring the Avengers, whetting our appetite for Infinity War when the two teams face off against Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meet me after the jump for my review of “Stayin’ Alive.”
Just as the first season of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series began with a gauntlet of shorts on Disney X-D, so does the second season. Come on, with a movie sequel coming, you knew a second animated season was coming as well, right? Meet me after the jump for my thoughts…
