It’s been a long, slow evolution. But like most change, when the moment hits, it hits with force. And it’s everywhere. Exhibit A: the badass female action hero. The road from Pam Grier’s shotgun wielding avenger in Coffy (1973) to Charlize Theron’s fearsome Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) has taken over forty years, but by now there’s no doubt that a woman can carry an action flick. And rock the house! TIFF is celebrating this signal achievement with a program called Beyond Badass: Female Action Heroes, and they’re showing some of the best.
Each week, one of Biff Bam Pop’s illustrious writers will delve into one of their favorite things. Perhaps it’s a movie or album they’ve carried with them for years. Maybe it’s something new that moved them and they think might move you too. Each week, a new subject, a new voice writing on… something they love.
Did you ever wonder how a film was put together, or how actors prepare for their roles? I need to thank Biff Bam Pop’s fearless leader, Andy Burns, for allowing me to do interviews on independent film directors and artists. It was through the interviews I had done here and here on Christopher Eilenstine, director of The Soulless, that led me to becoming one of the writers for Eilenstine’s new film, Shadows of the Forest. Thank you, Andy. Read the rest of this entry

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – “One in a Million You”
Fed up with the lack of appreciation from his teammates, Rocket accepts an offer to work with the Collector, only to discover his “job” is merely as another prisoner in Collector’s collection in an all-new MARVEL’S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY airing Saturday, October 3 at 9:30pm/8:30c in the Marvel Universe on Disney X-D.
I like watching “Sleepy Hollow” which stars Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, but although the cast was excellent, the writing needed to be vamped up, a lot. Maybe with season three, the creators have finally perfected the formula to make “Sleepy Hollow” kick-ass great. On the season two finale, Abbie did some time travel and Ichabod said a bittersweet goodbye to Katrina. But as we all know, our dynamic duo’s fight against evil is never over. Two new releases want your money this weekend, but only one of them can reach the toppermost of the popppermost. Which will it be? Here’s our prediciton:
A lot of people, and I mean a lot of of them, were severely let down when Ridley Scott returned to the world of science fiction with Prometheus. Some found it muddled, other found it boring, while others just plane old hated it. It would be reasonable, then, to expect some skepticism with Scott’s new film, The Martian. However, the film debut a few weeks ago at TIFF and received outstanding reviews (including one from our own Luke Sneyd) . With Matt Damon headlining a solid cast, we should see Scott return to the top of the box office with his latest and perhaps greatest science fiction endeavour. Look for a first place debut for The Martian with $51 million.
