Will The Martian lift off to the top of the box office?

Two new releases want your money this weekend, but only one of them can reach the toppermost of the popppermost. Which will it be? Here’s our prediciton:

A lot of people, and I mean a lot of of them, were severely let down when Ridley Scott returned to the world of science fiction with Prometheus. Some found it muddled, other found it boring, while others just plane old hated it. It would be reasonable, then, to expect some skepticism with Scott’s new film, The Martian. However, the film debut a few weeks ago at TIFF and received outstanding reviews (including one from our own Luke Sneyd) . With Matt Damon headlining a solid cast, we should see Scott return to the top of the box office with his latest and perhaps greatest science fiction endeavour. Look for a first place debut for The Martian with $51 million.

Opening wide this weekend is another film that received its premiere at TIFF is the crime drama Sicario, starring Emily Blunt,  Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. Reviews for this one have also be stellar, but it lacks the box office draw that Matt Damon is. However, if audiences make it out to this one, I’d say the star that brings them in is Emily Blunt, who is getting closer and closer to box office stardom. Look for a third place debut for Sicario with $19 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Hotel Transylvania 2 will once again be the choice for families this weekend. It should hit second place with $38 million. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will grab fourth place with $10 million, while The Intern will close things out in fifth place with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Martian – $51 million
2) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $38 million
3) Sicario – $19 million
4) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $10 million
5) The Intern – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
