Well, we were definitely off with our prediction of the power of horror at the box office this weekend. Instead, Liam Neeson managed to hold onto the top spot while the spooky Sinister had to settle for third. Here’s what went down:
Liam Neeson’s Taken 2 claimed bragging rights at the box office for the second weekend in a row, bringing in $22 million to lift the film’s take to a solid $86 million in two weeks. Taken 2 will have no trouble making it to $100 million in the next few days, and may just match the original’s $145 million North American take when it’s all said and done.
Find out what filled out the rest of the top five after the jump!
Ben Affleck continued to prove his worth as a director that can bring in an audience, as Argo debuted in second place with a solid $20 million. A combination of stellar word of mouth and pre-Oscar buzz for all the principals should give Argo a very healthy run of the next few weeks.
Debuting in third place was Sinister with $18 million, certainly a far cry from the $29 million I had predicted on Friday. However, the good news for the film is that it has already made back its $3 million budget. I think we’ll see a quick drop off on this one, especially with Paranormal Activity IV waiting in the wings.
The final debut in the top five this week was Here Comes The Boom, which could only muster up $12 million for fifth spot. Look for this one to make its way to VOD in no time.
As for the rest of the top five, Hotel Transylvania hit fourth spot with $17 million. The film has already grossed $102 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Sinister – $29 million
2) Taken 2 – $23 million
3) Hotel Transylvania – $18 million
4) Argo – $15 million
5) Here Comes The Boom – $10 million
And here’s what went down:
1) Taken 2 – $22 million
2) Argo – $2o million
3) Sinister – $18 million
4) Hotel Transylvania – $17 million
5) Here Comes The Boom – $12 million
Next week sees the release of Paranormal Activity 4, guaranteed to hit the top spot. Check back on Friday to see how much we think it will make!
