Marie Gilbert On… Rick Grimes

the_walking_dead_the_complete_first_season_1

Each week, one of Biff Bam Pop’s illustrious writers will delve into one of their favorite things. Perhaps it’s a movie or album they’ve carried with them for years. Maybe it’s something new that moved them and they think might move you too. Each week, a new subject, a new voice writing on… something they love.

The Walking Dead,” which is AMC’s hit series and one of the best apocalyptic shows on television, is more than a drama about zombies. It’s about the survivors, but more importantly, it’s about the man who leads them. Who is Rick Grimes? To learn why I picked him for my ‘On…’ column, meet me after the jump. The Walking Dead S05 E16: Conquer

Morgan-The-Walking-Dead-Season-5-2

On last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead” we witnessed Rick’s melt down. Hell! Rick is worried that the walls won’t hold and the people won’t fight. Unfortunately, what worked on the outside might not work in Alexandria’s version of the Emerald City. Rick has strayed from the yellow brick road and his fate lies in Deanna’s hands. Is she Glenda or the Wicked Witch? The only thing we know for sure is that the flying monkeys are gathering outside that wall. Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E15: Try

Last week’s episode directed by Jennifer Lynch had Facebook and Twitter ablaze with talk about Noah’s (Tyler James Williams) death. It was gruesome for sure, but what did we expect? Ms. Lynch skillfully reminded us that walkers are nasty and humans are dangerous. Is Pete abusing his family? Will Gabe, the Rat, spew more lies? Will Deanna show her true colors when Aiden doesn’t return home? I think I need some of Carol’s cookies. Don’t you? Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E14: Spend

the-walking-dead-episode-514-2-935x600

What happens when you try to tame tigers? On last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” we wondered how the people of the Alexandria Safe Zone had survived as long as they did. They are clueless to the brutal world outside. Thank goodness Rick and his team have settled in, but it’s not easy. Once you’ve lived in the heart of the jungle, it’s hard living in a zoo. Can you tame a tiger? Do you dare? Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E13: Forget

Assimilate, adapt, conform and blend in. On last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” we saw that Rick and his Spartans were out of their element in Alexandria. To remain members of the Safe Zone, our friends will need to act ‘normal,’ but what is normal when you’re living in the apocalypse? Assimilate can mean to join in, or like that Star Trek’s Borg, it can mean resistance is futile. Which is it and, is freedom just a state on mind? Sasha might know. Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E12: Remember

twd-s2e12-remember

On last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” Rick and the team had been invited to join the Alexandria Safe Zone, but our weary Spartans have been burned twice; Woodbury and Terminus. Will Team Rick be able to put down their weapons, to trust, to blend in? Aaron thinks they can. Sometimes, it’s hard to let down your guard. Sometimes, peace is scarier than war. The Walking Dead S05 E11: The Distance

the-walking-dead-season-5-the-distance

Last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead” was a series of epiphanies and emotional growth for all our characters. Although Daryl didn’t agree with Rick’s description of the group, I did. They have become the walking dead. They do what needs to be done and, with a little luck, they will survive to live another day. While Daryl and the others face their grief, a stranger appears in their midst. What Aaron (Ross Marquand) has to offer sounds too good to be true. Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E10: Them

the-walking-dead_season-5_episode-10_them

Them! Who are we talking about? Is it the friends that were lost this season? Is it our tired and weary ragtag group of survivors? Is it the walkers that hungrily follow them? Or is it a new enemy hiding over the next hill? In last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” Rick and Michonne wondered about the diced and sliced walkers in back of Noah’s home. Who killed them? An army marches on its stomach. Napoleon Bonaparte was well aware of this. Without food and water Team Rick is in big trouble. Will they survive? Read the rest of this entry

The Walking Dead S05 E09: What Happened and What’s Going On

It’s time to dig another grave. This time it’s for Beth, or is it. In a world where death reigns supreme and so many have died already, why did this death hit us so hard? Beth was our symbol of hope. This wisp of a girl with her gentle ways and her beautiful songs died defending a friend. Who will sing to us now? Noah suggests a new route and new hope for our team. What will they find? The Walking Dead S05 E08: Coda

We are at the mid-season finale until TWD returns in February and things are not looking good for Team Rick or Team Abe. We ended last week’s episode of “The Walking Dead” with the attempted hostage exchange botched and Sasha left unconscious. Carol and Beth are at the mercy of the wicked witch of Grady Memorial. Will Rick be able to make Dawn an offer she can’t refuse? Read the rest of this entry
