This weekend, a long talked about horror flick finally hits theatres, three actors try to breathe new life into The Three Stooges and an under the radar sci-fi flick hopes to see some action. Will any of them knock The Hunger Games from the top of the box office? Here are our predictions:
The Cabin In The Woods has been sitting on the shelves for a few years now because of studio issues, but the film, directed by Drew Goddard and co-written and produced by Goddard and Joss Whedon, has got a huge buzz going for it. Reviews have been solid, trailers haven’t revealed much and the movie stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), who is as popular with the ladies as he is with the gents. Could the film be too cerebral for the masses? Possibly, but I think the horror crowd is up for a smart genre flick. Look for The Cabin In The Woods to scare up $21 million at the box office to land in second this weekend.
The Three Stooges is the latest Farrelly Brothers film, but at this point in their career, that’s not a huge selling point. The duo haven’t had a real hit in over a decade and reinventing the beloved Stooges is really not going to help them, I think. With no big stars filling the shoes of Larry, Curly and Moe, I think this has train wreck written all over it. Look for The Three Stooges to debut in fourth place with $12 million.
Lockout stars Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace, two solid actors with almost zero box office standing. The sci-film, about a government agent sent to a prison planet to rescue the President’s daughter, has gotten virtually know hype or recognition leading up to it’s release this weekend. Look for it to debut somewhere outside the top five, likely in sixth or seventh place. If it can scrounge up $8 million, I’ll be surprised.
As for the rest of the top five, look for The Hunger Games to continue to hold onto the top spot on it’s way to $400 million. I’m predicting a gross of $25 million. American Reunion will hold third place with $15 million while Titanic in 3D should close things out with $11 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) The Hunger Games – $25 million
2) The Cabin In The Woods – $21 million
3) American Reunion – $15 million
4) The Three Stooges – $12 million
5) Titanic in 3D – $11 million

I saw Three Stooges today, expecting to despise it – but it was amazing. I laughed so hard I cried. Seriously, completely unexpectedly, this is hysterically funny! If word of mouth, and especially the original fanbase, catches on, this could be very big.
The Hunger Games will make good money because the theme plays to our fears of the future, but don’t be surprised if the Three Stooges does well with the box office draw. They were funny when I was a kid and they’ll survive this wired and high tech generation too. I want to see the Cabin, but not if it’s a slasher film.
