I have a secret to tell you. I have all the Hunger Games books, but I haven’t read any of them yet. I’ve made a conscious decision to watch the films first, and then read the books. This is a reverse of what I normally do, but I’ve found that I’m less disappointed in the films if I don’t come to the table with a fixed notion on how or if the film and book jived. Rolling Stone Magazine is calling Jennifer Lawrence ‘America’s New Sweetheart’ thanks to her breakthrough role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Judging by the huge opening the film had last weekend, the title may just stick. In the meantime, we’ve got a taste of Lawrence’s next film, the horror flick House At The End Of Street, co-starring Elisabeth Shue. It’s the story of a mother and daugher who move into a new house, right next to door to one where a double murder took place.

Wow. That pretty much sums up the opening weekend for The Hunger Games. Take hype, add in stellar reviews and polish it off with great source material and you’ve got a huge gross that left every other film in the dust. Here’s how the weekend turned out:
Normally our Saturday At The Movies column is up much earlier in the day, but knowing I’d be seeing The Hunger Games today, I figured I’d wait and give my impressions on the film that is literally demolishing the entire box office this weekend (you can check out our predictions on it’s return here). The good news is, if you’re a fan of the book by Suzanne Collins, I can’t imagine you walking away from this adaptation with anything but complete satisfaction. And if you haven’t read The Hunger Games and are walking into the film without knowing what to expect, you are in for a serious treat. Because the movie is more than just a stellar adaptation.
