Category Archives: Holiday Gift Guide 2014
It’s December 24th. Christmas Eve. And you still have to get your shopping done. I know, I know. You’re heads swimming right now. Maybe you’ve done some work and have jotted a list of gifts down to aid you in your shopping mall adventure today. But maybe you haven’t done that yet either.
Either way, we’ve got your back with easy, quick ideas for holiday gifts. Follow me after the jump for the 411 on the easiest of easies…the gift card!
Last week I suggested Roof Oasis by our own Marie Gilbert for the Biff Bam Pop! Holiday Gift Guide, but while Marie is one of our family here, she’s also part of another family of mine – the South Jersey Writers’ Group. They have books of their own I’d like to suggest for the Gift Guide as well. Meet me after the jump for the Gift of Reading.
During my lifetime, I have found that there is one gift for my fellow male gender that almost always hits the mark… weapons! My fascination with weaponry got started when I was about 13 years old. My father had returned from a business trip to the Philippines and had brought home a butterfly knife for both me and my younger brother. We grew up on a ranch with strict rules about weapons so we understood that these knives were not toys, but rather symbols of our coming of age as men. Over the years I’ve added several more knives and a few swords to my collection, my wife being the catalyst for most of those acquisitions.
Folks who know me know that I am a huge kaiju eiga fan, especially Godzilla, both old school and new school, but I’m also a fan of the Big G’s major competition over the years – Gamera. Throughout the sixties, seventies, and nineties, the giant flying turtle and friend to all children was Godzilla’s biggest rival, and now you can own (or give as a gift) almost all of the tough and titanic terrapin’s movies in one set. Check it out after the jump.
It’s the era of binge watching, and for the holiday season we’ve got some television series on dvd and blu-ray that you definitely will enjoy watching all at once. From full seasons to full series, check out our list, complete with links to buy.
Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series – The fine folk at Shout Factory have done a fantastic job putting together a gorgeous blu-ray set of arguably the most wacked-out Saturday morning television show from our youth. Through 5 seasons and 45 episodes Paul Reubens’ manic creation Pee-Wee Herman takes kids on a technicolour journey through his madcap playhouse where anything and everything can happen. Personal favourite moments include the secret word and Laurence Fishburne’s Cowboy Curtis, just one of many stars who show up throughout the series, which probably looks better now than when it first did in the 80s.
Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery (+ The Missing Pieces) – It took twenty years for fans to final see the deleted scenes from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, director David Lynch’s 1992 prequel film to the television cult classic he and co-creator Mark Frost developed for ABC and which ran from 1990-1991. Those 90 minutes worth of outtakes are just part of the gorgeous blu-ray set that was released this past summer compiling the entire series, the film and myriad extras. Consider this an essential purchase for anyone who loves brilliant, dramatic television. (Shameless plug – my book Wrapped In Plastic: Twin Peaks is out this February; you can pre-order it here.)
There are so many great comic book compilations available this holiday season, you’re sure to find something of interest for a friend or loved one (or yourself). The only thing you have going against you right now is time.
Still, it’s not too late to grab something and wrap it up before the holidays!
Here then, is the second installment of our great comic book compilation list. You can find the first one, published yesterday, right here. Of course, we have other comic recommendations for the holiday season here and here as well as more pricey picks here and here.
Follow me after the jump for some fantastic suggestions!
Over the last few weeks, our 2014 Gift Guide has detailed a number of comic book related ideas that you should consider wrapping up for that special pop-culture comic book fan in your life. You can check out two of those lists here and here.
Now, those selections are a little on the pricier side of things, but there are a number of fantastic – and affordable – comic book related compilations that you could lovingly give this holiday season.
Follow me after the jump, and I’ll run through eight different titles, in multiple collections, that everyone needs to reading!
Come and knock on our door,
We’ve been waiting for you,
Where the kisses are hers and hers and his,
Three’s Company too
In the list of great tv sitcoms, I rank Three’s Company incredibly high, even if it did first air nearly 40 years ago. For its theme song alone, it would have been a classic. But the series, about three roommates and their chronic misunderstandings, well, it’s truly the perfect sum of all its parts.
Folks who know me know I am a huge David Bowie fan, at every stage of the man’s career. I’ve even reviewed his last effort right here at Biff Bam Pop!. So, for the Bowie fan on your gift list, or if you’re a Bowie fan yourself (and really, who isn’t?), the grandmaster of rock and roll has released a unique new compilation for the holidays – Nothing Has Changed. Check it out after the jump.
