Simone Estrin’s 26-minute documentary, A Shift in the Landscape, is now playing at the Ryerson Image Centre’s (RIC) Student Gallery. As soon as the house lights dim, the colossal abstract sculptures of Richard Serra flood the screen. It is an immediate meditation on art and how it inhabits the environment.
There be beasts coming to movie theatres this weekend, and no doubt they will be ruling over all other films. How much will they conjure up? Here’s our prediction:
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a brand new film set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. That’s really all you need to know, and is explanation enough as to why I think this film is going to have an outstanding opening weekend. But a few more reasons – reviews have been solid, the script was written by JK Rowling herself, and director David Yates brings with him his Potter pedigree as the director of the last few films in the original series. While Harry and company are absent from Fantastic Beasts, fans have been clamouring to return to that world, and here’s their opportunity. Look for a first place finish with $120 million.
