Fantastic Beasts is aiming for a fantastic weekend

There be beasts coming to movie theatres this weekend, and no doubt they will be ruling over all other films. How much will they conjure up? Here’s our prediction:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a brand new film set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. That’s really all you need to know, and is explanation enough as to why I think this film is going to have an outstanding opening weekend. But a few more reasons – reviews have been solid, the script was written by JK Rowling herself, and director David Yates brings with him his Potter pedigree as the director of the last few films in the original series. While Harry and company are absent from Fantastic Beasts, fans have been clamouring to return to that world, and here’s their opportunity. Look for a first place finish with $120 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Trolls should hold on to second place once again with $22 million. Marvel’s Doctor Strange will fall to third place with $21 million. Arrival should find itself in fourth place with $16 million, while the new teen comedy The Edge of Seventeen will debut in fifth place with $14.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – $120 million
2) Trolls – $22 million
3) Doctor Strange – $21 million
4) Arrival – $16 million
5) The Edge of Seventeen – $14.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
