The Huntsman seeks to chop down The Jungle Book at the box office

It may not be summer yet, but it’s starting to feel that way at the box office, as big name movies are being rolled out in hopes of avoiding the glut of huge summer flicks. Will this weekend’s new release find an audience or will it get lost in the jungle? Here’s our prediction:

The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a sequel/prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, which made $156 million when it was released back in 2012. While Kristen Stewart is absent, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron are returning, along with new co-stars Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt. The biggest problem facing this film, apart from lacklustre reviews, is that Chris Hemsworth simply cannot open a film. He’s entertaining and well-liked, but unless he’s wielding Mjolnir, the guy is better in supporting roles, as I’m guessing we’ll see this summer in Ghostbusters. Look for a second place debut with $20 million for The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
