The Martian colonizes the top spot at the box office

It was a big weekend at the box office, and the film that claimed the top spot did so without any real competition. Here’s what went down:

Ridley Scott’s The Martian debut in first place with a simply outstanding $57 million. The star power of Matt Damon certainly helped bring in an audience, and the critical acclaim for the film didn’t hurt either. I had the chance to check out the film Saturday night with former Biff Bam Pop box office pundit Scotty G, and while I personally thought the film was a little slow at times, I was captivated by the stunning visuals of Mars, along with the in-space sequences. The Martian is certainly a crowd-pleaser and it should continue to have a strong run over the next few weeks.

As for the rest of the top five, Hotel Transylvania 2 dropped to second place with $31.7 million. Sicario went into wide release this week and hit third place, but with a disappointing $11.8 million. The Intern was in fourth place with $11.65 million, and could switch spots with Sicario when the Monday actuals are released. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials closed things out in fifth place with $7.3 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) The Martian – $51 million
2) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $38 million
3) Sicario – $19 million
4) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $10 million
5) The Intern – $9 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

3) Sicario – $11.8 million
