The Whispering Dark has a lot of horror to live up to.
The new, four-issue, monthly miniseries series, published by Dark Horse Comics, home of plenty of great horror-themed titles like Harrow County, Hellboy and Aliens (to name only a few) merges some of the best alchemy that the horror genre could possibly blend.
The elevator pitch for the series name drops the gritty, horrify realism of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and the cosmic horror of writer H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
That’s gotta scratch a horror itch for lovers of the genre.
Written by Christopher Emgard, who has previously written the video games Battlefield 1 and Star Wars Battlefront II (so you know he knows war – and the cosmos!), and illustrated by Tomas Aira, best known for his dark and harrowing work on Night of the Living Dead: Aftermath as well as War Stories (with famed writer, Garth Ennis), The Whispering Dark is a study on inconceivable war and the effect it has on the mind.
The United States is at war with Russia, and, after extracting a squad of army Rangers from deep inside enemy territory, helicopter pilot Hannah Vance is shot down. Together, with the Russian army hot on their heels, the group must find their way out of the battlefront – with an even more terrifying, and altogether unfathomable, enemy on the horizon.
Cthulhu meets Colonel Kurtz.
Cosmic horror meets the horrors of modern war.
And in the balance lies freedom, of a sort.
