There’s always room in my comic book reading pile for new works from writer and illustrator, Jeff Lemire.
Incorporate the gritty, noir visuals of artist extraordinaire, Andrea Sorrentino, and that new work is at the very top of my reading pile.
Make it a long-form suspense story about murder, altered states of consciousness, and an inter-dimensional malevolence, and that comic book is no longer at the top of my reading pile.
No, it’s in my hands. Open. And with pages being feverishly turned!
Luckily for all of us, that desire is fulfilled today with the release of the first issue of the brand new monthly comic book series, Gideon Falls!
And I can excitedly – and furtively – say that the suspense of Gideon Falls #1 does not disappoint!
Gideon Falls #1
Written By: Jeff Lemire
Illustrated By: Andrea Sorrentino
Published By: Image Comics
Gideon Falls, published by Image Comics, well known throughout many Wednesday Run columns as the publisher of the best creator-owned comic book projects out there, is being billed as a both a rural mystery and an urban horror.
At its center is the enigmatic “Black Barn”, an ethereal, otherworldly building that is said to bring death…and madness.
If the “Black Barn” sounds somewhat familiar, readers should look no further than Twin Peaks and that television series’ Black Lodge. Writer Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Moon Knight, Old Man Logan, Trillium) has gone on record as saying that he’s a huge fan of the cult-classic series so fans of writer/director David Lynch are certain to enjoy the wonderfully strange and ominous flavours inherent in Gideon Falls.
You can watch a preview of Gideon Falls #1 in the embedded trailer.
But like all of Lemire’s best work, it’s his characters and landscapes that are the most interesting.
Gideon Falls #1 introduces Norton Sinclair, a man with mental health issues, who believes he sees signs of a looming danger in the garbage that fills the downtown city streets. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Father Wilfred, new pastor to the rural town of Gideon Falls – a town that harbors its own, connected, secrets. And murders. The lives of Norton and Wilfred, it seems, are inextricably linked.
Fan favourite artist, Andrea Sorrentino (Old Man Logan, Green Arrow, I Vampire) is also inextricably linked to Lemire, this being the third time they’ve partnered on a series together. And readers are the better for it. Sorrentino’s gritty but realistic style is a perfect noir complement for the story’s atmosphere.
Gideon Falls is dark and dreadful and mysterious. But answers need to be discovered. And if Gideon Falls will find any illumination, it will only be found inside the feared Black Barn.
Make the run to your local comic book shop today – and discover answers of your own! Pick up the first enthralling issue of Gideon Falls #1!
