Will Pan fly past The Martian this weekend at the box office?

Families have the choice between two movies this weekend, but will either of them be able to topple last week’s number one? Here’s our prediction:

pan_ver2_xlgThis weekend’s big new release is Pan, a take on the Peter Pan mythology starring Hugh Jackman as Captain Hook. In many ways, this film does have a built-in audience, but I wonder if the story has been done to death over the last few years, with the television version the most recent. Reviews haven’t been strong, so the film is going to have to rely on Jackman’s star power and the fact that Hotel Transylvania 2, the only other family film out there right now, is already two weeks into its run. Look for Pan to debut in third place with $20 million, while HT2 will hold down second place with $21 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Martian will continue its run at the top of the box office with $34 million. The Intern will be in fourth place with $8.5 million, while Sicario will close things out in fifth with $7.4 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1)  The Martian – $34 million
2) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $21 million
3) Pan – $20 million
4) The Intern – $8.5 million
5) Sicario – $7.4 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
