Hang Ten With Silver Surfer #1 On The Wednesday Run–March 26, 2014

This whole “Marvel NOW!” thing has got a bit of a buzz going on, doesn’t it? I mean, as Marvel Comics’ answer to DC Comics’ “New 52” re-launch a few years back, it’s got longer legs, for one, and, arguable, more long-standing enthusiasm from readers for another.

Instead of re-starting all of their publishing titles with brand new #1’s on their covers in one go like DC did, Marvel has slow-played their marketing scheme, launching new titles or highlighting existing titles with great storyline jumping on points, as a “Marvel NOW!” issue. It’s been enticing, exciting, fresh, and, unlike today’s “New 52” which doesn’t feel so “new” anymore, “NOW!” is still, well, now!

And now (pardon me!), Marvel finally brings us to the edges of the cosmos: “anywhere and everywhere – hang on!” we’re told, with the new Marvel NOW! Silver Surfer monthly series!

For the last few years, acclaimed writer Dan Slott has been the guy behind the Spider-Man character. Creating a sense of freshness in the web-slinging hero never before experienced by fandom, Slott gave us the Superior Spider-Man, wherein his stories explored what it meant to be a hero and a villain as well as study the nature of consciousness itself! Meanwhile, fan favourite artist, Michael Allred, was busy crafting one of the most fun and adventurous comic books in recent history with FF.

Now, finally teamed-up together, the two creators are going galactic and exploring the far reaches of he Marvel universe with the Silver Surfer. In fact, they promise to go beyond the known Marvel universe, into “the strange, the new and the utterly fantastic!”

The sentinel of the skyways who holds the power cosmic (uh, read the series and you’ll find out if you don’ already know), the Silver Surfer explores the unknown alongside the earth girl who has challenged him to go where none have gone before. And you know, yes, you just know, that Galactus must make an appearance at some point along this voyage of discovery!

As a fan of the bravery that Slott exhibited with his Spider-Man story choices, and a huge admirer of Allred’s art, do yourself a favour and take my advice to explore the far reaches of space with them.

For fun, comedy, thrills and high adventure, grab your board and surf the waves of enthusiasm and anticipation! Make the run to your local comic book today and pick up Silver Surfer #1. It’s bound to be a rad trip!

Hang ten, dudes!

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
