This weekend sees two new releases hitting theatres. One is guaranteed lock for number one, the one a guaranteed lock for a lot of wocka-wocka. Here are our predictions:
Riding the tide of young adult books turned big time movies, Divergent is the first in a trilogy that should find some serious success with its target audience. While the series isn’t as massive as The Hunger Games or Harry Potter, there’s been enough anticipation surrounding this dystopian flick that it should do fairly well this weekend. Look for a first place showing with $58 million.
Also out this weekend is Muppets Most Wanted, the follow-up to the 2011 return of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzy and company. While it wasn’t a huge success, the previous film did enough to whet audiences appetite for more Muppet madness, and this new film, also starring Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, should draw in the hipster crowd and their kids. Look for a second place showing with $27 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Mr. Peabody & Sherman will be in third place with $14 million, 300: Rise of an Empire will be in fourth place with $10 million, while Need For Speed should close things out in fifth with $8 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Divergent – $58 million
2) Muppets Most Wanted – $27 million
3) Mr. Peabody & Sherman – $14 million
4) 300: Rise of an Empire – $10 million
5) Need For Speed – $8 million
