At the start of the weekend, Biff Bam Pop! predicted a big rush for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, giving The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug a tumble, and beating out other newcomers American Hustle and Saving Mr. Banks. Frozen would still hold onto the top five as well. Check me after the jump to see how BBP’s predictions matched the weekend’s real numbers.
So, to recap, here were Biff Bam Pop’s predictions:
1) Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues – $46 million
2) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – $29 million
3) American Hustle – $20 million
4) Frozen – $17 million
5) Saving Mr. Banks – $14 million
And here’s how things really turned out:
1) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – $31 million
2) Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues – $26 million
3) Frozen – $19 million
4) American Hustle – $19 million
5) Saving Mr. Banks – $9 million
Rounding out the top ten for this weekend are The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas, Walking with Dinosaurs, Dhoom 3, and holding down the ten spot, Thor: The Dark World.
Hmmm… the numbers weren’t quite as high as predicted, but perhaps folks were too busy and tired from holiday shopping to see a movie. The Hobbit stood a bit stronger than Anchorman, and Frozen did better than American Hustle, and all better than Saving Mr. Banks. I guess that says that folks would rather see a Disney movie, than see how one is made.
Being the big holiday, we have two different movie opening dates this week. Christmas Day brings the release of Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin, Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and if you’re not in the mood for remakes, there’s The Wolf of Wall Street and Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro in Grudge Match.
This coming Friday, the more traditional day for releases, we have probable Oscar contenders August: Osage County and The Invisible Woman, and Lone Survivor, and Justin Bieber Believe. It should be a busy week!
