“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born — to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Heed the call, then — for now, the Avengers Assemble!”
What a year it was for Avengers fans – with the success of the film and the new direction of the comic book, fans have had a lot to be happy about. And while you may think the Blu-ray release of Joss Whedon’s record-breaking film would be the Avengers product worth highlighting in our gift guide (and it is well worth a purchase), for dyed-in-the-wool fans and newcomers to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, we’re recommending picking up the fantastic first season of the animated Avengers series.
Find out why after the jump!
There’s little question that Joss Whedon got it right when he made the Avengers flick, but if you want to go hardcore comic book geekdom, it’s the animated series that really nailed what made the Avengers tick. With 26 episodes, you get background on all of the main characters (Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant Man/Giant Man, Iron Man, The Wasp, Hawkeye and Black Panther) that gives all of them more depth than you may expect from an animated series. The show is also bold, spending a huge chunk of its season dealing with a massive breakout of the world’s worst villains. And on a day unlike any other….well, you get it.
Though the second and fnal season of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has already aired, the first season was released in 2012 on Blu-ray and looks and sounds absolutely fantastic in hi-def. This is one of those shows that younger audiences (figure 8 and up) can get into, right alongside their geek friendly parents who could only have dreamed of a series like this in their youth (that would be all of us at Biff Bam Pop!). While shy on extras, this set is hugely recommended and perfect for Avengers fans old and new, which is why it makes Biff Bam Pop’s Holiday Gift Guide.
