It’s been a minute (just kidding) since we got a Stephen King adaptation, but it can be argued that his 1980 novel Firestarter is one of the most ripe for a fresh coat of paint. First adapted in 1984 by Mark L. Lester in the film that gave Drew Barrymore her big break, that version of the story that taught us all the word ‘pyrokinesis’ left a whole lot to be desired.
Blumhouse and Keith Thomas (The Vigil) look to spark up Firestarter again, with a 2022 version of King’s story that stars Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kurtwood Smith, Michael Greyeyes, and Sydney Lemmon.
If you’re not familiar with the original story, “a girl (Lemmon) with extraordinary pyrokinetic powers fights to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her. For more than a decade, parents Andy (Efron) and Vicky (Lemmon) have been on the run, desperate to hide their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) from a shadowy federal agency that wants to harness her unprecedented gift for creating fire into a weapon of mass destruction. Andy has taught Charlie how to defuse her power, which is triggered by anger or pain. But as Charlie turns 11, the fire becomes harder and harder to control. After an incident reveals the family’s location, a mysterious operative (Michael Greyeyes) is deployed to hunt down the family and seize Charlie once and for all. Charlie has other plans.”
