While it wasn’t a horrible weekend at the box office, it wasn’t a huge one for the duo of debuts that arrived.
Was it a case of poor reviews or was it a plain ole lack of interest that sunk Maleficent: Mistress of Evil? Either way, the numbers weren’t good at the box office for this Disney sequel. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil could only muster up an estimated $37.7 million at the box office this weekend, a far cry from the 2014 original’s $69 million debut. It’s highly unlikely that this film will even manage to cross the $100 million mark.
The weekend’s other new release, Zombieland 2: Double Tap debut in third place with an estimated $26.5 million. While that’s not a big number, the film’s budget was only $40 million so it’s going to wind up being profitable pretty quickly.
As for the rest of the top five, Joker dropped to second place with $28.3 million, bringing its total to $246 in North America. The film is going to have no trouble hitting the $300 million mark before it ends its run. The Addams Family was in fourth place with $14.2 million, while Gemini Man closed things out in fifth place with $7.8 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – $54 million
2) Joker – $28 million
3) Zombieland: Double Tap – $26 million
