‘Coco’ remains on top of the box office, ‘Justice League’ continues to drop

It was a fairly safe and predictable weekend at the box office, as there were no major releases making waves. Here’s what went down:

Coco remained at the top spot for a second weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated $27.8 and raising its two week total to an strong $110.4 million.

Way behind it in second place with $15.8 million is Justice League, which is a couple million short of crossing the $200 million. It’s likely the film won’t even make $250 million in North America, a disaster following the stellar performance of Wonder Woman.

The week in horror: Sabrina comes to Netflix, Friday the 13th + more

The creators of Riverdale are adapting Sabrina for Netflix, Friday the 13th gets a new Blu-ray set, and more, as we look at some of the biggest stories from the week in horror.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Comes to Netflix

Though Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had been developing a television version of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to go alongside Riverdale, which he is the creator and showrunner for, it turns Sabrina is actually heading to Netflix, complete with a two season pick-up. According to Variety, “The one-hour drama is based on the comic “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

Holiday Gift Guide 2017: TV Shows on Blu-ray + Digital

There’s always an abundance of DVD and Blu-ray offerings for the holiday season, many of them in box set form. Complete series, various season collections, and standalone seasons – whatever you’re looking to grab for someone, there’s something waiting. Here’s a rundown of some recent releases that should be solid gifting for the pop culture tv geek in your life:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Complete Series: Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Buffy The Vampire Slayer has once again been compiled into a complete collection. I say once again, as there have been a few different sets over the years (I know, as I had at least one of them). While hardcore fans can probably skip out on this one, it is definitely a beautifully put together package for anyone you want to introduce the world Buffy and the Scoobies to. This set features the extras from previous separate individual season collections, along with a reprint of the Dark Horse Season 8 Issue 1 comic book and a page to colour, illustrated by Season 8 artist George Jannety.

The Strain The Complete Series: Speaking of vampires, the recently completed FX series The Strain is now available in a no frills, nice boxed set of its four seasons. Created by Guillermo Del Toro, Carlton Cuse and Chuck Hogan, the series lasted for four successful seasons. The DVDs feature a variety of extras, and also some attractive slipcases for each individual season. For fans of episodic gore, The Strain is your choice this holiday season.
