It was bad news for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice this weekend, as a new movie took the top spot from right from under them. Here’s what went down:
Though the reviews were poor, the built-in fan base that loves Melissa McCarthy showed up this weekend, managing to put her new movie The Boss into the top spot at the box office with $23 million. Many were skeptical that the film could deliver, and while the bad reviews may not give it legs for the coming weeks, for its debut weekend, McCarthy and company absolutely have scored bragging rights.
As for the rest of the top five, it was another downward showing for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which fell to second place with $21.3 million, a large 59% drop off from its second weekend. The movie is currently sitting at $294.5 million domestically, and is a long way from being the blockbuster all involved wanted it to be. In third is Zootopia, with $12.2 million, while My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 hit fourth place with $5.9 million. Hardcore Henry closed things out in fifth place, debuting with $5.2 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The Boss – $24 million
2) Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – $23 million
3) Zootopia – $15 million
4) Hardcore Henry – $9 million
5) My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – $7 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) The Boss – $23 million
2) Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – $21.3 million
3) Zootopia – $12.2 million
4) My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2– $5.9 million

I want to like The Boss, but what I saw in the trailer made me occasionally cringe … might save my going-to-the-cinema pennies and wait until it streams on the interwebz. 🙂
