With Columbus Day in the US and Thanksgiving Weekend here in Canada, audiences were eager to go to the movies. Just not to the one big new release that hit theaters. Here’s what went down:
The Martian held on to the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row, grossing $36.5 million to raise its total to an oustanding $108.2 million. The film clearly has struck a nerve with audiences.
Hotel Transylvania 2 was in the second spot again this weekend, bringing in $23 million while raising its total to $119.5 million. The film is on track to outperform the original, which means we will likely see Drac and company back with a third instalment before too long.
Debuting in third place with a lacklustre $17.4 million is Pan, the new Peter Pan prequel starring Hugh Jackman. Unfortunately, neither the subject matter nor Jackman’s star power were enough to appeal to an audience that seemed to have zero interest in returning to Neverland.
As for the rest of the top five, The Intern was in fourth place with $8.8 million, while Sicario closed things out in fifth place with $7.5 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The Martian – $34 million
2) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $21 million
3) Pan – $20 million
4) The Intern – $8.5 million
5) Sicario – $7.4 million
