Happy Record Store Day! …Kind of.

It’s a regular old work day for us here in Canada but our neighbours to the south have been up for hours, camping out, lining up and salivating over deals, deals, deals! I am of course, talking about Black Friday – the day after Yankee Thanksgiving which for many, kicks off the holiday shopping season.

This year I have decided to try and buy locally as much as possible, so when I heard that there was a “Black Friday” version of Record Store Day happening, I did a (tasteful) happy dance at my desk at work.  As an individual with many music-loving family members and friends to buy for, I’m pretty excited about some of the great releases being put out especially for today.  (Note to brothers and husband: stop reading right now).

First up, for the ultimate Beastie Boys fan: Hot Sauce Committee Part Two Deluxe Edition on 12″ vinyl.  This comes packaged with a 60 page hardbound book of photos from the FFYR video shoot, a Blu-ray full of HSCP2 remixes, and more, There are only 450 of these puppies available in Canada which makes it a must-have for the serious Beastie Boys collector.

Next on Santa’s – I mean my – list, John Lennon’s Imagine: 40th Anniversary Edition.  I know a certain dad who would be thrilled to find this under the tree (shh! Don’t tell him). This Record Store Day Exclusive vinyl release includes the original LP (2010 re-master), plus the “Imagine Sessions” – a special 12” featuring additional tracks recorded in 1971, two postcards and a poster.

For the Black Keys collector who can’t wait for the new album to drop, pick up a Record Store Day exlusive copy of singles “Lonely Boy” and “Run Right Back” on 12”. We all know the Black Keys sound just about perfect on crackly vinyl, am I right? Swoon!

Philly Psych darlings Dr.Dog are releasing a special  7 inch containing two brand new songs, “Control Yourself” and “Warrior Man”. They even put together a little video of themselves packaging the disc up! If that’s not endearing I don’t know what is.

Fifteen year old me would be all a-squee over this fairly bad-ass offering from Type O Negative. This set contains all of Type O Negative’s material on double green vinyl, with the album art recreated. Each album will also have new, branded liner notes documenting the album’s creation. Part of me thinks it maybe should have also contained a copy of a certain someone’s appearance in a certain adult magazine – just saying!

Obviously I can’t list everything here so click here more on what’s available for Record Store Day – Black Friday Edition.  I plan on hitting up my local indie vinyl shop post-haste and I suggest you do the same! Happy Black Friday!
