On the last episode of Outlander, Claire got a cool reception from her sister-in-law Jenny at Lallybroch. To further complicate their relationship, she and Jamie were entrusted with Jenny and Ian’s son, even though Jamie previously failed to tell his parents that young Ian was with him when the young man went missing from home. Ian was to recover the treasure chest from the island so that Jamie could pay Laoghaire’s alimony. Unfortunately for everyone, Ian was intercepted and swept away on another vessel during his mission. How are the Frasers going to handle this latest problem? Please note that spoilers follow.

Outlander S03 E08: ‘First Wife’

Because I was on vacation last week, I wasn’t able to recap Outlander episode seven, “Crème de Menthe.” So, this is what you missed in a nutshell. (Note: There are spoilers for both episode seven “Crème de Menthe” and episode eight “First Wife”). Remember the guy who attacked Claire in her room? She killed him, despite her best efforts to save his life. He was sent by Sir Percival, who shows up at Madame Jeanne’s brothel in a fruitless search for Jamie’s illegal liquor. Ian Murray is looking for his son young Ian, and Jamie denies having seen him, even though his nephew has been working for him in his smuggling operation. There’s a fire at the print shop, after another of Sir Percival’s men searches it and finds pamphlets that could get Jamie into big trouble. We were introduced to brother and sister Archie and Margaret Campbell. Claire believes that Margaret suffers from a mental disorder. Will they pop up in a future episode? And what was the biggest revelation in “Crème de Menthe”? Jamie is married to another woman, and that’s sure to upset Claire. Caught up now? Okay, now on to episode eight, “First Wife,” after the jump.

On last week’s episode of Outlander, we saw Claire start medical school while Jamie devised a plan to be turned in to the British by his sister so that her family might benefit from the reward. Outlander S03 E01: The Battle Joined

Outlander Season 3

It seems like an eternity since we last saw a new episode of Outlander. Was the start of the third season worth the wait? The following contains spoilers, if you haven’t watched the episode yet.

The show opens with a gruesome landscape, the bodies of soldiers who didn’t survive the Battle of Culloden, strewn about the battlefield. Jamie Fraser lies seriously wounded atop a pile of fallen brothers. In his haze, he witnesses redcoats relieve bodies of any weapons that they find. Soldiers found still alive are killed, and Jamie lies still to avoid detection. He has flashbacks to the battle. We see Murtaugh (how I’ve missed his wit)! We also see Jamie wage a personal battle with Jack Randall, and it appears that Jamie cuts him down, as the body on top of Jamie seems to be Randall’s. Jamie thinks he sees Claire walking toward him as the snow falls, but it’s a fellow Scot who removes him from the pile of the dead to safety. We see a dragonfly in amber on the ground.

Claire and Frank seem to be faring better than Jamie. The year is 1948 and they are in Boston because Frank has taken a job at Harvard. They are checking out a home that they will buy to accommodate their growing family. (Claire is pregnant with Jamie’s child). It appears they are trying to resume their lives, but when a busybody tells Claire that she won’t find a man like Frank again, we can see in Claire’s face that she is thinking of Jamie.
