Tales of the apocalypse – and what happens after – are certainly not new to pop culture or the comic book medium.
Good comic creators, however, are constantly trying to bring a newness to their end-of-the-world stories, focusing on different aspects of the human condition from various places, threats and perspectives, as well as demographics: adults, children – and those in-between.
In addition to blazing new narrative trails, some of these writers, artists and publishers are also pushing the boundaries of the comic book format. And that’s what we’re seeing with today’s release of the youth-oriented, post-apocalyptic story, What’s The Furthest Place From Here?

Written and illustrated by Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss (4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) and published by the immensely creator-supportive Image Comics, What’s The Furthest Place From Here? tells the story of what happens at the end of the world from a youthful, music-laden perspective. In this world, gangs of children live amongst the ruins searching for meaning and life beyond the wastelands.
Billed as a tale about all the things that matter the most: survival, friends…and your record collection (who here wouldn’t carry their fave comics or music albums close to their breast when traveling the wasteland?), What’s The Furthest Place From Here? blazes a new path by providing, in addition to the normal monthly issues, a special edition publication that contains a 7” vinyl record acting as a musical backdrop to the comic book story.
This limited quantity deluxe edition version of the comic contains two songs from some of today’s best indie and punk bands. The first vinyl “issue” has exclusive songs from punk/indie rocker, singer/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker/Jets to Brazil) and punk/indie power-pop stars, Joyce Manor.
It’s a perfectly fresh, invigorating and wholly exciting listening complement to each monthly issue of What’s The Furthest Place From Here?
Make the run to your local (and better) comic book shop today and pick up What’s The Furthest Place From Here? #1 – and if you can grab it, get that deluxe edition that comes with the music!
The end of the world has never looked or sounded better!
