You might not know who the Female Furies are. That’s OK. You’re not alone.
Based on Apokolips, the Female Furies are Granny Goodness’ downright dastardly all-female fighting force.
I know. That description may not help you. The Female Furies are pretty obscure. Granny Goodness is probably even more so. Although, as a comic book reader, you’ve probably heard of Apokolips. And Darkseid, the evilest evil this side of the Source Wall.
Truthfully, we’re talking legendary Jack Kirby creations here, circa the 1970’s. And maybe it’s a mystery that the Fourth World set of characters isn’t more well know around the comic book reading community.
Female Furies #1, out today, aims to fix that problem.
Created by King Jack Kirby as part of his Fourth World set of characters, published by DC Comics, (shortly after leaving Marvel Comics after what might be described as the most creative years in comic book history), the Female Furies have always been a bit…lost in the background of larger, more established, heroes and villains.
Really, I’m talking about Darkseid and Mister Miracle, who have seen multiple publications bearing their names over the last fifty plus years.
But Big Barda, Aurelie, Mad Harriet, Lashina, Bernadeth and Stompa? Other than the first name on that list, not so much.
And yet they are all so cool. And ruthless. And ripe for…story!
Written by Cecil Castellucci (Shade, the Changing Girl)and illustrated by Adriana Melo (Plastic Man), Female Furies is a new, monthly miniseries that speaks to both power and suppression. Leave it to the comic book medium to mix these two ideas in a rollicking, action-packed tale!
The Female Furies are the baddest of the bad, raised to be evil and cunning and brutal in and out of war. Trained by Granny Goodness, they are Darkseid’s elite attackers. But the girls are constantly left behind when the men go to war. Now, with New Genesis making mincemeat out of Darkseid’s forces, the Female Furies are about to showcase their malicious qualities.
Like many things in life, even war can be rigged against women. As purveyors of disaster, the Female Furies may discover that disaster may even befall them!
