With Naomi, DC Comics is branching out with their stable of comic book publications, trying to hit a younger generation of readers. It’s a long time coming, really.
Rival Marvel Comics has been doing this for a good while – with plenty of success seen in Miles Morales as Spider-Man, a Ms. Marvel title that has people clamoring for more, a thoroughly enjoyable young-reader Nova title, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and a strange-but-popular comic book in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
Yep. That last one is as whacky…and as fun…as you think it is!
Over the last month, DC has finally unleashed their highly anticipated Wonder Comics line: a series of monthly publications aimed at younger fans of comic books (as well as older readers)…and young readers who might become fans of the comic book medium. Young Justice, a highlight of the January 9th edition of this Wednesday Run column, was the first in that line.
Today, it’s the first issue of the eagerly anticipated comic book, Naomi.

Superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis (The Man of Steel, Action Comics, Pearl) continues to put his creative fingerprints on the DC Universe. Not only is he all over the recent Superman stable of titles, but he’s also all over this new Wonder Comics line of publications. He’s the main writer of the previously mentioned Young Justice, doncha know?
With Naomi #1, Bendis is joined by fellow writer, David F. Walker (Cyborg), and up and coming artist, Jamal Campbell (Green Arrow, Justice League of America: Vixen Rebirth) to unfurl a new DC Universe mystery.
A chance encounter between Superman and his nemesis, Mongol, in her small, northwestern town, leads to heroic (and historic) ties that common (read: not-so-common) girl Naomi never would have imagined. It’s a story that will take her into the heart of the DC Universe – revealing brand new ideas and stories that we readers have never seen from DC Comics before!
It’s a tantalizing introduction to a brand new character, isn’t it? With Brian Michael Bendis at the helm, you know it’s going to be important, and you know it’s going to be good.
