Predator Week: Can ‘The Predator’ Survive Controversy to Win at the Box Office?

This weekend could prove to be an interesting one at the box office, as The Predator is surrounded by a significant amount of controversy thanks to director Shane Black’s hiring of a convicted sex offender who shared a scene with Olivia Munn. The actor called for the scene to be cut, it was, but Munn’s courageous decision to go to the studio has left her on the outs with her director and some of her castmates.

Will it matter to general audiences?

I doubt it, but the the quality of The Predator may be enough to keep audiences back. You can read my review here, and determine if this is a film you want to spend your money on. While the creature has become iconic, one of the other issues the movie will face is the lack of a name star to draw in skeptical audiences. There’s no Schwarzenegger here; heck, there’s not even a Glover or Brody, for that matter. Ultimately, as much as genre fans may want a new Predator film, I doubt mainstream audiences will care that much. On that note, look for a first place debut with $32 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Nun will fall to second place with $20 million. Paul Feig’s new film, the suspenseful A Simple Favor, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, will debut in third place with $14 million. Crazy Rich Asians will be in fourth place with $10 million, while Matthew McConaughey’s White Boy Rick will arrive in fifth place with $8 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Predator – $32 million
2) The Nun – $20 million
3) A Simple Favor – $14 million
4) Crazy Rich Asians – $10 million
5) White Boy Rick – $8 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
