This is the sort of weekend at the box office that are always fun to watch. Two mammoth franchises are going to battle it out for the top spot, and even though one is more likely to hit the top spot, the other’s success could cut into its numbers. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom vs Incredibles 2 – who will win the battle?
Realistically, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom should have no trouble topping the box office. The previous film debut at number one back in 2015 with a record-breaking $208 million. This time out though, the franchise has a few things going against it. First, the nostalgia factor is gone. Second, reviews have been less than stellar, with terms such as “boring” being thrown around. Third, and finally, Incredibles 2 is a massive hit and should have a strong second weekend, one that will likely cut into Jurassic World’s opening weekend returns. On that note, look for the dinosaurs to debut in the top spot with $135 million – not a record-breaker, by far.
Incredibles 2 should have a fantastic second week showing. I was at a screening this past Thursday night and the movie was packed. You can check out Scotty G’s review for the film here, and it’s safe to say that I echo his sentiments – it’s an excellent, entertaining sequel that doesn’t miss a beat. Look for Incredibles 2 to drop to second place with a still stellar $92 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Ocean’s 8 will be in third place with $9 million. Tag will grab fourth place with $7 million, while Deadpool 2 close things out in fifth place with $5.9 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – $135 million
2) Incredibles 2 – $92 million
3) Ocean’s 8 – $9 million
4) Tag – $7 million
5) Deadpool 2 – $5.9 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
