First of all, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and whatever else we can or can’t say these days. Everyone at Biff Bam Pop! wishes you the best for the season, and for 2018. As you can imagine. we’re still recovering from the loss of our friend and colleague Glenn Walker, who really helped take BBP! to another level. It’s hard to think of the site without him, but we’re determined to honour Glenn and his memory by continuing to write work you enjoy reading.
With the holiday weekend here, it’s going to be a battle for your money at the box office. What film is going to come out on top? Here are our predictions.
New this week is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a sequel to the original Robin Williams-starring film from 1995. With Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson headlining the cast, the film has been getting surprisingly strong reviews, which will definitely make it a viable option to folks who have already seen The Last Jedi, or are waiting for the crowds to die down. Look for it to debut in second place with $32 million over the three-day weekend.
Pitch Perfect 3, which is as described – the third instalment in the franchise starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Unfortunately, third time may not be a big charm, as reviews have been scathing. The target audience will head out this weekend, but don’t expect too much overall from this film. Look for Pitch Perfect 3 to debut in third place with $29 million.
The final debut in the top five should be The Great Showman, starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum in a musical look at the legendary promoter. Reviews have been mixed, though nearly all of them have called out Jackman for his great performance. This could potentially be another family offering, but the film has such heavy competition it’s doubtful it will show much heft this weekend. Look for a fourth place showing with $12 million.
As for the rest of the top five, even with the online community griping about some of the story beats in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film will have no trouble holding on to the top spot at the box office. Look for it to bring in $100 million over the three-day weekend. Ferdinand will close things out in fifth place with $11 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Star Wars: The Last Jedi – $100 million
2) Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – $32 million
3) Pitch Perfect 3 – $29 million
4) The Great Showman – $12 million
5) Ferdinand – $11 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
