It’s a massive weekend at the box office, as audiences are set for the next installment in the Star Wars saga. Just how much will this movie make? Here’s our prediction:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi returns us to the world of Luke, Leia, Rey and Kylo Ren, though this time its in the hands of director Rian Johnson. Word is the film is outstanding, an Empire Strikes Back for the next generation. 2015’s The Force Awakens debut with $247 million, but that was ten years after the end of the prequel trilogy and pent up desire for more films, so don’t expect The Last Jedi to reach that lofty number. It will do great business, though, there’s no question about that. Look for a first place debut with $220 million.
As for the rest of the top five, the animated film Ferdinand, featuring the voice of John Cena as the title character, should do nicely with families with kids who aren’t quite at the Star Wars age yet. Look for a second place debut with $20 million.
Coco will fall to third place with $10 million, while Wonder will be behind it in fourth with $7 million. Justice League will close things out in fifth place with $5 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $220 million
2) Ferdinand – $20 million
3) Coco – $10 million
4) Wonder – $7 million
5) Justice League – $5 million
