A phoenix from the ashes. That’s what we’re talking about when we talk about publisher Valiant Entertainment.
Founded in the late 1980’s as Valiant Comics by Marvel Comics legends, Jim Shooter and Bob Layton, sold to video game maker Acclaim in the mid 1990’s and shuttered in the mid 2000’s, Valiant Entertainment (as it’s now called) was resurrected in 2005 but really rose to prominence in the comic book scene only last year.
But it’s today that the publishing company of superhero comics comes into its’ own. Today sees the release of Valliant’s first superhero team-up book with Unity #1 – history in the making!

Now, I’m not a huge follower of the Valiant universe of comic books and characters, although I’m familiar with the bigger names, like X-O Manowar, that dates back to the height of the early 1990’s comic book craze. Jeez, sales of that particular series rose as high as 800,000 for the “0” issue in 1993 (according to Wikipedia). That was during the time of multiple covers, gimmick marketing, and comic book speculators temporarily driving sales and prices of various books. That was the time when I, and many other readers, stepped aside of the barrelling comic book freight train, right before the big crash that nearly destroyed the industry.
Over the past year, Valiant has rebranded itself, becoming a viable publisher in the industry via interesting characters while wooing some pretty fantastic writers and artists from larger companies like DC, Marvel, Image and Dark Horse. Who wouldn’t be interested? Here are heroes and villains unburdened by the baggage of history and mythos. Here, with Unity, is an opportunity to create something new. Imagine creating Justice League or the X-Men – for the first time! What would that look like in the twenty-first century?
Matt Kindt, acclaimed creator of Mind MGMT (a series that is very highly spoken of here in these parts), is the ongoing writer for Unity, Valliant’s first superhero team title. Doug Braithwaite, fan-favourite artist of Justice and Journey into Mystery, is on visuals. This is an all-star team, working on what will be an all-star book! The premise? A team of (ruthless and volatile) super-powered individuals united against Valliant’s original superhero, X-O Manowar – a threat responsible for the decimation of an alien world and the occupation of Eastern Europe.
It would seem that, along with great power, politics will also take centre stage in the twenty-first century’s superhero team up book!
Over the last year, there’s been big buzz over the impending arrival of Unity #1. Make the run to your local comic book shop and pick it up. Gather with all of the other excited fans, here, at the beginning of a brand new superhero history!
Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
