‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Looking to Step on the Competition

Godzilla, the King of the Monsters returns to theatres this weekend, and the questions is, will he be be able to take down Aladdin?

It’s been five years since Godzilla roamed the North American big screen, in a reboot that was reasonably successful. Enough so, at least, that it inspired Kong: Skull Island, and now Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which will feature the titular character up against the Titans, long dormant monsters like Mothra, Rodan, and others. The trailers have been consistently strong for this one, and the hype surrounding the film will certainly help it with its numbers, though I doubt we’re looking at the blockbuster many hope Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be. Look for a first place debut with $55 million.

Also new this weekend is Rocketman, the story of Elton John. Reviews have been strong, with comparisons to Bohemian Rhapsody inevitable. Taron Egerton has been getting good notices for his portrayal as Elton, but it’s questionable whether the film would have been better served opening in the fall/winter Oscar time. With its R-rating, it’s hard to totally gauge how well Rocketman will do. Look for a third place debut with $29 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Disney’s Aladdin will drop to second place with $42 million. The new thriller Ma, starring Octavia Spencer, will debut in fourth place with $18 million, while John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum will close things out in fifth place with $14 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Godzilla: King of the Monsters – $55 million
2) Disney’s Aladdin – $42 million
3) Rocketman – $29 million
4) Ma – $18 million
5) John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – $14 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
