Tim Burton’s Live Action ‘Dumbo’ Debuts on Top of the Weekend Box Office

It wasn’t a great weekend for Disney’s latest live action adaption of one of their classic animated features, as Dumbo wasn’t able to really catch flight.

Amidst lackluster reviews, the Tim Burton film debut with a less than stellar $45 million. That’s far off from his Alice in Wonderland adaptation from back in 2010, which arrived with $110 million. It hasn’t been a great few years for Burton, whose track record at the box office has been hit or miss lately. As for Disney, they’ll be able to take the loss on Dumbo, what with owning Marvel and Star Wars.

As for the rest of the top five, Jordan Peele’s Us Was in second place with $33 million, a strong hold from last week’s massive $71.1 debut. The film has already crossed the $100 million mark in North America. Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel was in third place with $20.5 million, raising its total to $353 million. Five Feet Apart was in fourth place with $6.2 million, while new release Unplanned debut close behind it in fifth with $6.1 million. That’s an incredibly tight race, and the two films could switch spots when the actual come out on Monday.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Dumbo – $55 million
2) Us – $40 million
3) Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel – $22 million
4) Five Feet Apart – $5.5 million
5) Wonder Park – $5 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Dumbo – $45 million
2) Us – $33 million
3) Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel – $20.5 million
4) Five Feet Apart – $6.2 million
5) Unplanned – $6.1 million
