‘Aquaman’ Remains Number One, ‘Escape Room’ Arrives In Second Place

What happens when an under the radar horror film finds its audience? You get Escape Room!

Surprising a few pundits, the PG-13 horror film managed to have a very solid debut weekend at the box office, arriving in second place with $18 million. Considering the movie only cost about $9 million to make, everybody over at Sony must be extremely pleased with the results. Can you say new horror franchise? I bet you can.

As for the rest of the top five, Aquaman was on top of the box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in $30 million and raising its North American total to $259 million, with $300 million easily in reach before it’s out of theatres. Mary Poppins Returns was in third place with $15.7 million, while Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse grabbed fourth place with $13 million. Finally, Bumblebee closed things out in fifth place with $12.7 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Aquaman – $30 million
2) Mary Poppins Returns – $22 million
3) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $12.5 million
4) Escape Room – $12 million
5) Bumblebee – $11 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Aquaman – $30 million
2) Escape Room – $18 million
3) Mary Poppins Returns – $15.7 million
4)Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $13 million
5) Bumblebee – $12.7 million
