We’ve got a relatively short edition of Box Office Predictions this weekend, as there are few new releases that could possibly make a real impact in theaters. That means last week’s number one should have an easy time retaining its spot on top for the second weekend in a row.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is without question the first letdown of the new Disney-Lucasfilm era. The film is severely underperforming – as of today it has only made $115 million in North America -and it will be interesting to see where it tops out at when its run finally comes to a close. Will it even reach $250 million? I’m skeptical. Regardless, this weekend Solo: A Star Wars Story should have no problem holding on to the top spot. Look for it to bring in $35 million.
Deadpool 2 will be in second place with $25 million. The film is currently outpacing the original in the same time frame, but with all the summer competition, I doubt Deadpool 2 will manage to top the original’s box office return. Avengers: Infinity War will come in behind it in third with $13 million, as it crosses the $640 million mark this weekend. The film will end its own domestic run lower than Black Panther, which remains roughly $2 million away from hitting $700 million. Meanwhile, the new release Adrift, featuring Shailene Woodly on a boat, will arrive in fourth place with $12.5 million, likely on the strength of a teen audience looking for something new. Finally, Book Club will close things out in fifth with $6.5 million, as it remains essentially the only real film for adults not interested superheroes and Star Wars.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Solo: A Star Wars Story – $35 million
2) Deadpool 2 – $25 million
3) Avengers: Infinity War – $13 million
4) Adrift – $12.5 million
5) Book Club – $6.5 million
