‘Murder on the Orient Express,’ ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ Take on ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

There are a few new releases hitting movie theaters this weekend, but neither of them should have the power to unseat the God of Thunder. How will they perform? Here are our predictions:

With an ensemble cast and director Kenneth Braunaugh leading the charge, Murder on the Orient Express should prove to be the adult choice this weekend. Agatha Christie remains one of the defining mystery writers of all time, and her Hercule Poirot is still a beloved character. The film skews older and is really the only appealing entry for non-genre fans. Look for Murder on the Orient Express to debut in second place with $24 million.

Also out this weekend is Daddy’s Home 2, the sequel to the 2015 break-out film starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. This time out, Mel Gibson and John Lithgow have been added to the mix. However, comedy sequels haven’t had much success at the box office of late, and there’s no reason to think Daddy’s Home 2 will buck the current trend. Look for a third place debut with $22 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Thor: Ragnarok will continue its winning ways. Look for it to hold on to the top spot with $61 million. A Bad Moms Christmas will be in fourth place with $8 million, while Geostorm will close things out in fifth place with $2.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Thor: Ragnarok -$61 million
2) Murder on the Orient Express – $24 million
3) Daddy’s Home 2 – $22 million
4) A Bad Moms Christmas – $8 million
5) Geostorm – $2.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday and see how the weekend turns out!
