Will Power Rangers morph into a box office hit this weekend?

It’s almost like summer at the box office, what with so many big movies opening over the last few weekends. The next three days are no different, as three new releases are about to be unleashed. Will any of them have the power to knock down the current beast at the box office. Here’s our prediction:

Power Rangers is the reboot/reinvention of the beloved 1990s television show that has a rabid fanbase. However, are there enough fans to make this a must-see in theaters this weekend. I’m going to go out with a firm maybe. Power Rangers certainly won’t knock Beauty and the Beast from the number one spot, but it may offer up some decent counter programming along with an appeal to families who already saw Disney’s latest. Look for a second place debut with $32 million.

Also opening this weekend is the R-rated sci-fi film Life, starring the dream team of Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. While it would be foolish to expect numbers anywhere close to what Deadpool delivered, it will be interesting to see if Reynolds is able to draw a larger audience than he did prior to his breakthrough as the Merc with a Mouth. Look for a third place debu for Life with $22 million.

The final new release is CHiPS, a take on the classic late 70s/early 80s tv show. No big name stars and no pre-reviews make this one a non-starter. It will debut outside the top five.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Beauty and the Beast to continue to roar at the box office this weekend. It will remain at number one and should bring in $89 million. Logan will be in fourth place with $8.8 million, while Get Out will close things out in fifth place with $6 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Beauty and the Beast – $89 million
2) Power Rangers – $32 million
3) Life – $22 million
4) Logan – $8.8 million
5) Get Out – $6 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. My daughter has seen both Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers numerous times at the theatre. If I ask her, she would say Power Rangers is her favorite. But my twins prefer Beauty and the Beast. I would like to see Beauty and the Beast.
